Who is Garry Medcalf!
My Parents worked for a charity looking after Downs syndrome and other mentally Disabled young adults when I was born, By the time I was 2yrs Old they were Superintendent and Matron of a County Council Observation and Assessment Centre in Gloucester.
We lived there until I was 11-yrs old, so for 10 years I lived with an average of 18 brothers & sisters of all kinds of background. I was treated the same as all the rest going to school and trips with all the rest. The children that came through the door ranged in age from day’s old babies abandon by their Mothers in Hospital to those sent by the Law Courts to be assets as to what course of action would be most appropriate for them. In that tome I knew those who had been abused, used and thrown away and to a point abandoned by the system. Some of the older one went on to be placed in Approved School or Balstal. Others were fostered or returned to their own families. While there we were caught up latter with the Fred West inquiry. So, it gave me an understand how and why those who have gone through the system think and feel.
At this time while at school I did a lot of Drama & on a few youth competitions & Impressing the head of Drama at my Comprehensive School’s enough for her to take me with her, to the Bristol Old Vic Youth Theatre (where she also taught) at weekends & holidays, doing a 40-minute round trip to take me. This opened my eyes to what real acting was about but unfortunately!
We then moved to Scotland helping at my Uncles Hotel in the Boarders Dumfries & Galloway then on to a large Country Estate near Aberdeen. There I learned to do forestry and gamekeeping (Hunting & Shooting/stalking etc). And working in the Main House as Under Butler/Footman.
Then we moved back to the Cotswolds where I went to collage to study Hotel, Catering & Institutional Management. With regards to this I worked my way up through the Forte Hotel & Roadside Catering Group to a manager and trainer. Also looking after the Political and Social Elite. Doing this for over 15 years. While still working Occasionally Under my Father as Under Butler. During this time looking after Senior Members of Parliament, International Dignitaries & the Royal Family. Also, at this time I was given training to a certain level of Close Protection and small arms use.
Finally, as a family deciding to run our own Pub/Inn for ourselves, doing this for the last 30 years or so. Here I have made may unusual artistic friends from within the Preforming Art who started me back on the path of Acting. Which I finally got the push to re-stepping into performing when I took on a new Bar Person who was doing an BA in Performing Arts in London. Studying with Brian Tymoney studying the Method and work with Mark Pegg at the Acting Academy studying general acting techniques for stag and camera including a weekl ong in person Musical Theatre workshop.
